Union Pines High School Freashmen Konner Kinlaw and Corbin Yow take North Carolina State Championship

The North Carolina State Championship was held on Shearon Harris Lake in New Hill, NC. This lake is known for producing heavy bags of largemouth bass. However, with a cold front lingering over the state for several days, the fishing was going to be tough. The day started off with 38 teams in the cold rain. Thankfully, the winds were light but out of the east. Everyone arrived in warm clothes covered in rain suits ready for the challenge.

Teams gathered around in their boats for the blastoff and were ready to fish. After the rules and the national anthem, boats blasted off in 3 different flights. Hours passed and we started getting reports that no teams were catching any fish. Some teams called it a day due to the cold temperatures and rain. By the end of the tournament, only nine teams were able to successfully put fish in their live-wells. As the anglers started to check in their fish, we could tell it was obviously going to be low numbers of bass but good quality. The third place team of Trent Lawson and Aaron Shumaker weighed in 1 fish at 6.54lbs.  The second place team of Harrison McCall and Carson Palmer weighed in 2 bass at 6.65lbs and first place was won by Konner Kinlaw and Corbin Yow with 2 bass at the weight of 6.78lbs.

Konner and Corbin attend Union Pines High School in Cameron, NC and are both freshman. They were able to take first place by throwing square bill crankbaits in 3ft of water in the back of coves during the middle part of the day. Being the first time as a team, these young men along with their boat captain Derek Kinlaw did a great job and we congratulate them for winning the North Carolina SAF State Championship!

McCullough & Hamlin Win High School Event at Lay lake

McCullough & Hamlin Win High School Event at Lay lake

The Cedar Bluff team of Collin McCullough and Justin Hamlin bested the elements Saturday and put together a 15-14 pound sack of spots to win the AL High School State Championship at Lay Lake.  Rain, wind, rising water levels and muddy water did not stop this team from catching several spotted bass during this event.  The used a drop shot in 10-14 feet of water to catch most of their fish.

In second place was the Sand Rock Wildcat team of Brody Robison and Levi Cox with a nice limit weighing 12-12 pounds.  Finishing third was Eli Chambers & Hunter Herfurth from Vinemont High School with 9-01 pounds.  The Big Bass of the day went to JC Silvey & Skyler Stevens with a nice 3-13 lunker.

Most of the teams fished deeper water to catch their fish.  Successful Baits included a drop-shot rig, a Ned-Rig. Spinnerbaits and a squre bill crankbait.

Schneider & Shealy Win South Carolina State Championship

The Batesburg-Leesville team of James Schneider and Shelton Shealy topped the twenty-pound mark to win the 2019 SAF South Carolina High School State Championship at Santee Cooper this past weekend.  The team used a 6-00 lb lunker to anchor their 20-02 lb bag to take Big Bass and championship honors.

Just behind them in second place was Timothy McKenzie and Carson Lucas of Waccamaw High School with a nice limit weighing 16-15 pounds.  Larson Harkins and Bradley Deaver, from Stratford High School, took third place with 11-11 pounds.

Rounding out the top five places were the teams of Johnny Koester and Reid Shaw from Berkley High School and Landon Gramling and Tucker Veronee from Gilbert Bass Anglers with 11-01 lbs and 6-06 pounds respectively.

Most anglers said that with the changing weather during the last part of the week, mixed with the storms on Friday night, made the bite completely different than it had been during the last weekend.  Many anglers said they got quite a few bites but that most of them failed to meet the minimum size limit requirement.  Anglers reportedly caught their fish on Speed Craws, Trick Worms and spinnerbaits in anywhere from 4-10 feet of water around trees and rocky banks.
