MUHLENBERG COUNTY WINS KHSAA BASS FISHING STATE CHAMPIONSHIP ON KENTUCKY LAKE

GILBERTSVILLE, Ky. (April 28, 2014) – The Muhlenberg County High School team of Cameron Brooks and Chase Geary brought a five-bass limit to the scale Saturday weighing 17 pounds, 15 ounces to win the 2014 Kentucky High School Athletic Association Bass Fishing State Championship on Kentucky Lake. The duo’s two-day total of 10 bass weighing 33-6 gave them a narrow 1-pound, 3-ounce winning margin over the second-place team of Mason Shelton and Drake Oliver of Trigg County High School.

The 10 teams ended competition in:

1st:             Muhlenberg County High School – Cameron Brooks and Chase Geary, 10 bass, 33-6

2nd:            Trigg County High School – Mason Shelton and Drake Oliver, 10 bass, 32-3

3rd:                        Calloway County High School – Nathan Camp and Brandon Falwell, 10 bass, 30-7

4th:             Muhlenberg County High School – Jacob Bowles and Hunter Hampton, 10 bass, 28-14

5th:             Calloway County High School – Jared Phillips and Nick Proctor, 10 bass, 28-6

6th:             North Laurel High School – Gabe Blair and Lane Williams, nine bass, 27-7

7th:             Trigg County High School – Douglas Colson and Zack Colbert, 10 bass, 27-1

8th:             Corbin High School – Morgan Boggs and Tanner Jordan, 10 bass, 23-15

9th:             Franklin County High School – Cameron Thompson and Jacob Moore, seven bass, 21-7

10th:           Washington County High School – Michael Sandusky and Michael Shelton, eight bass, 20-9

Lane Williams from North Laurel High School won the Big Bass Award on Friday with a bass weighing 5 pounds, 15 ounces. Wes Baker from South Laurel High School was named the winner of the National Guard Best and Brightest Award. Trent Arrowood from Johnson Central High School was chosen for the Forcht Bank Uncommon Excellence Award.

The 2014 KHSAA Bass Fishing State Championship took place April 25-26 on Kentucky Lake in Gilbertsville, Ky. The second-annual event featured 46 teams that advanced from four regional championships held across the state. A total of 185 teams competed in regionals this season, an increase of 76 percent over the sport’s inaugural 2012-2013 campaign.

Partners With The BFL Event On Truman Lake

PONCA CITY, Okla. (January 15, 2014) – The Bass Federation (TBF), in partnership with FLW is pleased to host the 2014 Student Angler Federation (SAF) MISSOURI HIGH SCHOOL STATE CHAMPIONSHIP on Sunday, June 15th at Long Shoals Marina on Truman Lake in Warsaw MO..

The state championship is a two person team event for students in grades 9-12. Registration for anglers and their “coach,” who will provide the boat they compete in, is online at HighSchoolFishing.org. Check-in is 4:00pm to 5:00pm CST on Saturday, June 14th at the BFL weigh in trailer at Long Shoals Marina located at 12730 Steamboat Rd. Warsaw MO 65355, with a mandatory rules briefing to follow the BFL weigh-in. We highly encourage all teams to pre-register online or by phone in advance to avoid late registration fees.

“We are excited to once again partner with the FLW Outdoors to provide another first class High School event” stated TBF High School Fishing Programs Coordinator Shane Dubois. “The BFL Staff rolls out the red carpet for our anglers and gives the event the feel of a professional level tournament” added Dubois.

“State championships allow every SAF member in North America the opportunity to fish in a championship tournament setting,” TBF National Youth Director, Mark Gintert, stated. “This year, with the help of our partners at FLW, we’re expanding the program again by offering more advancement opportunities based on field size. In 2014, the top 10% of the field will advance. This rewards areas of the country working hard to grow the sport of high school fishing.”

Students and parents can go to HighSchoolFishing.org for details on the Student Angler Federation (SAF) and to sign up. Cost is only $25/ year.  Membership includes full TBF and FLW benefits, FLW Magazine e-Edition and insurance coverage for clubs and students. The top 10% of each SAF state championship and the top 3 teams from any SAF National OPEN event will advance to an FLW/TBF High School Fishing Conference Championship. The top 10% of each conference championship will advance to the FLW/TBF High School Fishing National Championship held spring of 2015 in conjunction with a major TBF or FLW event. The National Champions win a $5,000 college scholarship to the school or their choice. All SAF members nationwide and all open and state championship participants automatically qualify for the largest event in high school fishing, the 2014 High School Fishing World Finals. At the 2013 World Finals, over $40,000 in scholarships and prizes were awarded.  As with all SAF national events, there is no entry fee to this come one, come all, family vacation event that gives every high school team a shot at thousands in scholarships and prizes.

If you’re not a 2014 SAF member, there’s a one-time $25/per angler fee.  This includes full TBF & FLW membership for the year, as well as, free entry to ALL National SAF events!

A unique SAF event feature is the “angler testing” component. It’s not “just about fishing” but also about education. This year’s angler testing will come from TBF’s new on-line education format with Faculty of Fishing. Anglers can go to highschoolfishing.org and click on “Online Education” then type in their SAF number and zip code to access the FOF site. They have a host of chapters covering a wide variety of topics. “Angler testing and education is an industry first by TBF,” Gintert said. “We built education into the foundation of the entire program when we began, and our partnership with FLW provides even more benefits and opportunities for them to take advantage of,” Gintert continued.  “For only $25 per year these young anglers and have opportunities unlike anything the industry has ever seen.”

FAN High School Fishing Series, “Fishing never felt so good”, on Lake LBJ, May 3rd.

FAN High School Fishing Series brings event number three to Lake LBJ in the beautiful Texas Hill Country.  This will be the final qualifying event for the 2014 championship and the race for angler of the year is rapidly closing.  The top 50% of the representing High School fishing teams will earn the right to compete in the FAN High School Championship this fall with the chance to win over $5000 in scholarships and prizes.

With an impressive win on Lake Austin and setting a new FAN High School Fishing Series weight record with 20.10 pounds was the FAN High School Bass Team of Preston Franke and Andrew Zeigler moved them into the top spot for AOY points. However, it is still anyone’s to win with mere points separating the top 10 anglers, and a solid performance on Lake LBJ will be all it takes to make the leap to the top spot.
