Fry and Geiss win on the Madison Chain of Lakes for the Wisconsin High School Fishing State Championship

Madison, Wisc. – July 11, 2022 – A small but competitive group of teams gathered on the shore of Lake Waubesa, one of the lakes that makes up the very fishy waters of the Madison Chain of Lakes for the 2022 Wisconsin High School Fishing State Championship. Teams were comprised of anglers from across the state looking to secure a spot in the 2023 High School Fishing National Championship to take place in La Crosse, WI next June.

A beautiful day met the 16 anglers though the afternoon breeze made for a tougher bite as the day went on. Half the teams found a way to drop the tournament limit of 5 fish in the basket but only one could come out the state champion.

The team of Hayden Fry and Griffin Geiss (Brookfield East High School) locked into a bite earlier in the week and kept up with it to lock in the win weighing 12lbs 15ozs. Exactly one pound over the second-place team of Cameron Gates and Nick Schaefer (Oregon High School).

Hayden and Griffin will now have the opportunity to fish in the National Championship in their home-state and take home thousands in scholarship money to further their education and perhaps their competitive fishing future.

Holm and McCalla secure 5 fish to win the 2022 Minnesota High School Fishing State Championship

Isle, Minn. – July 11, 2022 – 28 teams participated in the Minnesota State High School Fishing Championship with the hopes of advancing to the 2023 National Championship in La Crosse, WI. Anticipation was high until late rules changes forced the event organizers to change the length limit of the fish allowed to weigh.

Originally teams were going to be allowed to weigh their 5 best fish over 14 inches, but due to regulation changes on Mille Lacs, teams were pinched into a 12-17” size range of keepable bass. This threw the best laid plans out the window.

Perseverance was key though for the team of Aiden Holm and Reid McCalla (Becker High School) as they were the only team to secure 5 legal fish to weigh-in a tournament winning bag of 9lbs. 15 oz. The future Juniors will have the opportunity to fish for hundreds of thousands of dollars in scholarships next June.

Along with Aiden and Reid the 3rd place team of Kolbe Sahr and Eion Quiel (Aitkin High School) will be representing Minnesota in the National Championship in La Crosse.

A big thanks goes to Mac’s Twin Bay Resort, McQuoid’s Inn and Da Boathouse, all located in Isle, MN and supported the teams and staff at this event.
