Dylan Fuller and Caleb Conrad were the first team to weigh-in at the 2014 Tennessee State Championship at Dayton Boat Dock on Lake Chickamauga and they posted a huge 25lb 7oz sack that set the bar for the rest of the day on the productive Tennessee reservoir.

Georgia State Champions

With the largest State Championship field of the 2014 SAF season the pair of incoming seniors led the 124 boat field from start to finish capturing the title and a spot in the TBF/FLW Southeastern Conference Regional Championship in September. The pair also claimed a $10,000 College Scholarship to Bryan College provided by new head coach Michael Keen who is building what will surely be a top notched program in the college fishing arena.

“We caught a lot of fish today on a variety of baits but the bigger fish came on a 5XD and 6 XD’s that we fished in 7 to 12 feet of water” stated Conrad. “We just stuck with it throughout the day and when we caught that big one I felt we were in pretty good shape” added Fuller who brought in the second biggest fish of a tournament, a 6lb 15 oz toad that carried the team to the championship. “I think a few people heard him when he caught that one” stated the smiling Conrad who poked a little fun at his teammate.

Elijah Cartwright and Jacob Thomas were right behind the winning pair with a 23lb 6 oz sack that allowed them to sneak by their Soddy Daisy Teammates Alyssa Coleman and Erica Smith who had a 23lb 2oz limit of Chickamauga Bass to their credit and a third place finish.

The top 10% of the field advance in each of the SAF competitions, so the state of Tennessee will be well represented with a 12 team contingent advancing on to the fall competition and a shot at the TBF/FLW High School National Championship.

Also coming up big in the competition were the Lew’s Big Bass winners, Shane Broadwell and Bryce Travis who brought an 8lb 4oz beast to the Dayton Boat Dock weigh-in area to win the Lew’s Reel package. (Pictured Below)

The Ontario championship is a two person team event for students in grades 9-12. Registration for anglers and their “coach,” who will provide the boat they compete in, is online at HighSchoolFishing.org. Check-in is 6-6:30-am EST on Saturday, July 27th at the weigh in trailer at Island Marina, with a mandatory rules briefing to follow. We highly encourage all teams to pre-register online or by phone in advance to avoid late registration fees.

“We are very excited to get our Canadian High School Anglers involved with the Student Angler Federation and all it has to offer” commented Tournament Director Daniel Notarianni.  “We are looking to get this program started here and help it grow as it has in other areas” added Notarianni.

“High School championships allow every SAF member in North America the opportunity to fish in a championship tournament setting,” TBF National Youth Director, Mark Gintert, stated. “This year, with the help of our partners at FLW, we’re expanding the program again by offering more advancement opportunities based on field size. In 2014, the top 10% of the field will advance. This rewards areas of the country working hard to grow the sport of high school fishing.”

Students and parents can go to HighSchoolFishing.org for details on the Student Angler Federation (SAF) and to sign up. Cost is only $25/ year.  Membership includes full TBF and FLW benefits, FLW Magazine e-Edition and insurance coverage for clubs and students. The top 10% of each SAF state championship and the top 3 teams from any SAF National OPEN event will advance to an FLW/TBF High School Fishing Conference Championship. The top 10% of each conference championship will advance to the FLW/TBF High School Fishing National Championship held spring of 2015 in conjunction with a major TBF or FLW event. The National Champions win a $5,000 college scholarship to the school or their choice. All SAF members nationwide and all open and state championship participants automatically qualify for the largest event in high school fishing, the 2014 High School Fishing World Finals. At the 2013 World Finals, over $40,000 in scholarships and prizes were awarded.  As with all SAF national events, there is no entry fee to this come one, come all, family vacation event that gives every high school team a shot at thousands in scholarships and prizes.

If you’re not a 2014 SAF member, there’s a one-time $25/per angler fee.  This includes full TBF & FLW membership for the year, as well as, free entry to ALL National SAF events!

A unique SAF event feature is the “angler testing” component. It’s not “just about fishing” but also about education. This year’s angler testing will come from TBF’s new on-line education format with Faculty of Fishing. Anglers can go to highschoolfishing.org and click on “Online Education” then type in their SAF number and zip code to access the FOF site. They have a host of chapters covering a wide variety of topics. “Angler testing and education is an industry first by TBF,” Gintert said. “We built education into the foundation of the entire program when we began, and our partnership with FLW provides even more benefits and opportunities for them to take advantage of,” Gintert continued.  “For only $25 per year these young anglers and have opportunities unlike anything the industry has ever seen.”
