Minnesota High School State Champions Crowned!!

On Saturday 9/10/11 the Minnesota Federation of Bass Anglers held the first ever Minnesota State High School Bass Championship on Gull Lake in Brainerd, MN. Held at Cragun’s resort the weather was perfect, and the bass were biting. All participating teams caught and weighed fish.  Prizes were awarded to all participants regardless of their finish. Awards and prizes were furnished by our generous sponsors at Cabela’s, Ranger Boats, Solar Bat eyewear and Berkley.

The winners and new Minnesota State High School Champions are Nick Montilino from Edinaand James Stein II from Northfield.  Targeting 8 foot deep weed clumps with jigs; their limit of five bass weighed 16 pounds 3 oz, beating 2nd place Annandale Cardinal anglers James Chapman and Ryan Floistad whose bag weighed 12-8. Third place plaques went to Will Stolski and Parker Sundquist of the Brainerd Warriors with a 5 fish limit at 11-2. Continue reading

Tipton High School Wins Inaugural Indiana High School Bass Fishing Championship

Sept. 10, 2011 – Hoosier Hills Marina on beautiful Patoka Lake in Southern Indiana provided the perfect location for Andy Hinkle and Keegan Gray from Tipton High School to win the inaugural Indiana High School Student Angler Federation State Bass Fishing Championship.  The Tipton duo narrowly got by the team of Greg Zellers and Brody McWilliams representing Winamac High School who finished second, and were also SAF Certified Student Anglers.

The Tipton team brought in two nice Patoka Lake largemouth bass that tipped the scales at 5.48 lbs. narrowly edging the Zellers/McWilliams team who brought in an almost identical pair that weighed in at 5.41 lbs.

Tipton High School was one of the first High Schools in the state to organize and run their school fishing club under The Bass Federation’s Student Angler Federation. Their school team has 10 members who have been fishing against themselves in club level events this fall. Continue reading

Lenz and Anderson win High School Fishing Southeast Regional on Harding

AUBURN, Ala. (Sept. 10, 2011) – Dalton Anderson and Dawson Lenz from Georgia’s McIntosh High School won the High School Southeast Regional tournament held on Lake Harding Saturday. TBF along with FLW Outdoors held the high school tournament in conjunction with the FLW College Fishing Southeast Regional.

McIntosh High School had four bass weighing 5 pounds, 15 ounces to beat Fuquay-Varina High by 1 pound, 15 ounces.

Lenz said the team used a Texas-rigged green pumpkin Senko weightless in the grass as well as a
 Texas-rigged 8-inch Lake Fork ribbontail worm with a 3/16-ounce bullet weight to catch their fish Saturday.

“During practice we were flipping with a Speed Worm and today we switched to a Senko to try and draw more subtle bites because the lake,” he said. “This cold front that came through this week really put a hurtin’ on the fish, so we tried to get as many bites as we could. We knew it was going to be tough so we went ahead and switched to more sublte baits and that worked out pretty well for us.” Continue reading
