Humble and White win 2016 Mississippi State Championship

MS State ChampionsTwenty-eight teams traveled from all over the state to launch from Aberdeen Marina for the 2016 Mississippi High School State Championship.  The teams with smiles on their faces and anticipations high went to work to catch five bass limits in what would prove to be a tough day on the water.

The weigh-in showed just how difficult the day would be as most of the anglers came to the scales with only 1-2 fish to be weighed.  The tournament waters only gave up one 5 fish limit and three, 4 fish bags.

Even though the final outcome was in their favors, champions, Parker Humble and Kody White, had a tougher day than most out there.  They lost the lower unit of their boat around 7am before they made it to their first stop.   They were able to find a replacement boat with lots of help from the boat captain and were able to set out to finish the day.  Despite the odds, Humble and White managed to bring the only five fish limit to the scales, which weighed 13lbs 1oz weighted by a 4lb 6oz lunker.

MS State 2nd PlaceThe second place team and regional qualifiers, were Brock Kennedy and Tyler Murray, with four fish weighing 8lbs 14oz.  Paul Swan and Gaibe Bean took third place with a bag of four fish that weighed 8lbs 9oz.

The City of Aberdeen pulled out all the stops for the anglers from the championship banquet to the great facilities provided for the launch and weigh in; the anglers definitely felt special at a well-ran event.

Segracy & Shelton Claim Victory on Lake Cumberland in KHSAA Region 2

One hundred and sixteen high school teams converged on Lake Cumberland at Holcomb’s Landing for the KHSAA Region 2 qualifying event.  It was a perfect weekend with beautiful weather, warming temperatures and active bites as fish were on the move preparing to spawn.  A total of 529lbs of fish were weighed and 25 teams brought five fish limits to the scales.

Trevor Segracy & Michael Shelton from the Washington County Bass Commanders took top honors as their limit of bass topped the scales at 16.08lbs.  During practice, they caught most of their fish using a spinnerbait in the back of Beaver Creek.  But, on Saturday when the bite fell off and was slow to non-existent the team decided to start throwing a jig. Almost immediately, a keeper was caught and a few minutes later they landed another using a jig in the Cumberland Craw color.  The decision played out well as the team caught enough keepers to claim the victory.

Will O’Rourke & Clay Evans from Trinity High School finished second with a solid limit weighing 14.10lbs.  The team caught most of their fish using a drop shot rig around rocky banks in about 5-10ft of water.

The big bass of the event was caught by Katie Marshall & Grant Wyatt of Franklin County High School.  Grant caught the 4.14lb beauty on a square billed crankbait.

The Top 16 teams of this event advance to the KHSAA State Championship May 13-14 on Kentucky Lake at KY Dam Village State Park.
