GILBERTSVILLE, Ky. (March 17, 2015) – The Bass Federation (TBF) and FLW, the world’s largest tournament-fishing organization, will host a Student Angler Federation Murray State High School Fishing Open on Kentucky Lake in Gilbertsville, Kentucky, March 28 with the winning team receiving $4,000 in scholarships to Murray State from Independence Bank and FLW. The tournament will offer high school anglers the experience and intensity of tournament bass fishing while also testing their own bass-fishing skills against their peers.

“We are proud to partner with Independence Bank and the Murray State Bass Anglers to offer the winning team $4,000 in scholarships to Murray State,” said Dave Washburn, FLW vice president of operations.  “It’s a small way for us to honor the memory of Jim Carter, Murray State’s vice president for institutional advancement, who passed away February 13. Jim was a tireless supporter of College Fishing and High School Fishing. His numerous contributions to the sport will benefit students in Kentucky and across the nation for generations to come.”

The Murray State High School Open is a two-person (team) event for students in grades 7-12. It is open to students from any state. Each member of the winning team will receive a $2,000 scholarship ($4,000 total for the team) to Murray State University. Registration for anglers and their coach, who will provide and drive the boat from which they compete, is open online at HighSchoolFishing.org. Participation is free for all Student Angler Federation Members. Students who are not yet SAF members will pay a $25 membership fee that includes eligibility to fish SAF tournaments at no charge; insurance coverage for students and their bass-fishing club, school and volunteers; advancement opportunities from local and state events to national events offering scholarships; a digital subscription to FLW Bass Fishing magazine; access to free online fishing education courses; and much more. The York County High School Angling team helped Cabela’s open their new store in Ft. Mill South Carolina over the weekend. Led by advisors Coach Gibson as well as Mike and Ellie Carnes the team led a host of outside vendors who filled the new store parking lot which saw crowds well into the thousands who came out to see the 100,000 square foot facility.

The teams worked through Saturday’s rain as well as Sunday’s sunshine to help young anglers improve their casting skills by hosting a Reel Kids Casting contest.

Special thanks go out to the entire squad for their great effort to support the TBF as well as their club during the event. They also helped distribute information on both the South Carolina High School State Championship in May as well as the nearby North Carolina event coming up in June.

Due to high water conditions on the Red River the 2015 SAF Louisiana High School State Championship will move its tournament to Sibley Lake in Natchitoches. The event dates will remain the same with registration being held at Northwestern State University on Saturday March 28^th at 4:00pm to 5:30pm. The Rules meeting will immediately follow the Registration period. All teams are encouraged to register on line at highschoolfishing.org.

The tournament takeoff will move to the two Sibley Lake public launch facilities and the launch details will be given to each team at registration. Take off time will remain at 7:00am on Sunday March 29^th.

The event weigh-in will move to Natchitoches Central High School with the scheduled time moving to 3:30pm for those interested in watching the teams weigh-in.

All remaining event details will be discussed at the registration/rules meeting at Northwestern State as well as all of the anglers and their coaches being treated to dinner at the meeting.
